The printer is on the project from week one
29, January 2026
For a book of studio photographs we sat with the printer before we set the text. They told us which black would hold on uncoated stock and which varnish would scuff in the post.
Those limits changed the layout. We gave images more margin and dropped a thin rule that would have vanished. The book looks calmer because the process was honest.
Digital-only jobs skip this step. Everything else should treat production as a collaborator, not a last-minute vendor.
“A file that ignores the press is only half designed.”

What we decide before we draw
A one-page brief comes first: audience, proof, constraints, and the first three applications. If that page cannot be signed, we are not ready to design.
This keeps the work honest. Campaign ideas can wait until the system has a spine.

How a piece leaves the studio
Every article and project ends with files, licences, and a named owner. Handoff is part of the design.
